Portuguese giants SL Benfica have become the first Pot 1 team in the history of the modern Champions League not to score a single point in their group.
Benfica were drawn in Group A alongside Manchester United (Pot 2), Basel (Pot 3) and CSKA Moscow (Pot 4), but Rui Vitoria’s team had a shocker of a campaign, losing all six of their group games and only managing to score one goal.
Benfica results Champions League 2017/18
Benfica 1-2 CSKA (Seferovic)
Basel 5-0 Benfica
Benfica 0-1 Man Utd
Man Utd 2-0 Benfica
CSKA 2-0 Benfica
Benfica 0-2 Basel
Only 22,470 turned up at the Stadium of Light to watch Benfica’s 2-0 loss to Basel in MD 6, in stark comparison to the 57,684 that were in attendance when Manchester United watched Lisbon.
While Benfica have lost some key players this summer, you couldn’t blame their supporters for feeling the Eagles had enough in their squad to qualify ahead of both Basel and CSKA, or atleast finish third and move into the Europa League.
