With Porto’s exit at the hands of Juventus in the Champions League earlier today evening, it appears that Portugal will lose their quota of three Champions League spots for the 2018/19 edition of the tournament. The beneficiary will be Russia, who will gain an extra spot.
Benfica went out in the Round of 16 to Dortmund last week, while Porto suffered a 3-0 loss on aggregate to Juventus.
That effectively means that the big Portuguese trio of Sporting, Benfica and Porto will now have to fight for only two CL places, and also significantly reduces the chances of us seeing a Braga or Guimaraes in the Champions League in the future.
It could also significantly affect the finances of the big Three team that finishes outside the CL spots and make the gap between the haves and the haves not that much more.
