Five major talking points from Atleti v Real

The last Madrid derby at the Vicente Calderon produced plenty of fireworks and after 20 minutes, one would’ve felt Atleti, inspired by their fans, were going to do against their cross town rivals what Barcelona did to PSG earlier in the competition.

1) Keylor Navas should have saved Griezmann’s penalty, but didn’t

At 1-0 down due to Saul’s early header, Atleti won a penalty. Antoine Griezmann took the spot kick. Navas should’ve saved it, but didn’t. The Costa Rican is well regarded in Madrid, but this was one of those occasions when Real would’ve felt that the fax machine should not have malfunctioned when they were moving for David de Gea!

2) Karim Benzema’s moment of magic

Benzema’s moment of magic when in a 1 vs 3 situation set up Isco’s equaliser and ended Atleti’s fightback, with the away goal ensuring Los Colchoneros needed to score three more times.

Look at Zidane’s quote after the game!

“I don’t know how Benzema got out of there. We were talking after the game and I asked him how he got out of there. He could not tell me either”

3) Casemiro’s foul on Griezmann goes unpunished

Casemiro has developed a reputation of being a hard player and many felt Viktor Kassai did Bayern a disservice by not carding him despite several borderline challenges. Here is one more- against Griezmann, which went unpunished.

4)Navas redeems himself with double save

Navas redeems himself with this superb double save to deny Carrasco and Gameiro

5)Godin hits Ronaldo hard

Godin for a second made Ronaldo’s face look exactly like the bust that came in for much flak some weeks ago.
